Breaking News: Falcons Coach Bobby Petrino Resigns, to Coach Arkansas

From ArmchairGM:

ESPN is reporting that Atlanta Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino has resigned, and will replace Houston Nutt as coach at Arkansas, heading back to the college ranks as did Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier. The extent of if last night’s 34-14 loss to the Saints was his last game, or if he will coach all the way to their season finale against Seattle is unknown at this time. Petrino took over for Jim Mora in Atlanta, but was put into a war zone. Michael Vick is gambling and dogfighting, Joey Harrington can’t throw or run, Morten Anderson is ancient, and injuries have put his team at a 3-10 record.

More on this story to come, but I believe Petrino’s decision to move back to college is wise, because the events happening in Atlanta right now are the last things that he had in mind. Again, it’s a breaking report from ESPN’s John Clayton, and more events will come throughout the night.

Washington AD Todd Turner Resigns

After the athletic director for the University of Washington Todd Turner, gave football head coach Tyrone Willingham one more year to suck prove he is a great coach, Turner quit.  Not a surprising decision by any means, heck, I think it is because he was so Pro-Willlingham that got him a lot of fire under his seat. The resignation is effective at the end of January of 2008. Although UW president Mark Emmert says that there is no connection between Willingham’s stay and Turner’s immediate resignation, I say that’s nonsense.

Ever since Turner took the job in 2004, what was a dominant Husky football program, getting 11 wins and a trip to the Rose Bowl, now can’t even get 11 wins in 3 years. The basketball program was a #1 seed in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, and they were blitzed by Louisville in the round of 16. Different seed and the same ending the year after that, a loss to UConn in OT in the round of 16. They weren’t even in the NIT after a poor record with an inexperienced team in 2006. Now it’s 2007, and it looks like UW may not even get a winning record.

I’ve never been a fan of Turner, he has made some poor decisions that have made UW sports a laughing stock, and hopefully the new AD in February can revive Washington athletics once more.
