This Day Sucks….A Lot

02/29/2008 Mookie 2 comments

Josh Brown, kicker, cult hero for bald people. The reason why the Seahawks had a playoff berth in 2006 and the hero of 2 games in their 2005 Super Bowl run. He’s a free agent, he’s had a nice run, and he’s asking for a ton of money….he’s a bloody kicker!!! So today he was signed, taken away from Seattle.

So Josh? Where do you plan to go?  Kansas City? Atlanta? St. Louis is considering you. Maybe you’ll take Kansas City or Atlanta. Please don’t take St. Louis Josh, we’re begging you.

You picked St. Louis. Okay, that’s fine…..enjoy staying home for January. I’m going to throw stuff around and smash my keyboard so see ya….

I didn’t know this one. According to the free to edit wikipedia page of Peter Gammons, the ESPN baseball analyst is roiding (click on the image for larger view).

Can’t say I saw that one coming. I was thinking Counterpoint Steve Phillips was bulking up a little bit.

Myron Cope Dies at 79

02/27/2008 Mookie Leave a comment

The Pittsburgh Steelers, the NFL, and the broadcast industry lost a great member in Myron Cope. The famous Steelers analyst known for his nasal voice, and the invention of the Terrible Towel, died today of unknown causes (his health was failing) at the age of 79 at a nursing home.Cope was also known for some catch phrases such as “Okel Dokel” and Yiddish expressions like “Feh!”. It was Cope who had nicknames for Steelers players like RB Jerome “The Bus” Bettis, and Kordell “Slash” Stewart. He was a very popular member of the Steelers organization, and once he joined way back in 1970, the stadium had sell outs, and Pittsburgh coincidentally became the dynasty of the decade.

In 35 years, he became the influences in the careers of Chris Berman and Mike Lange. His style was unique, he was always jovial, excited. He left the Steelers radio broadcast because of said health problems. He’s been replaced by Tunch Ilkin, but it’s never been the same.

Myron Cope will be remembered perhaps as the greatest Steeler to never play for them. Creating the Terrible Towel, getting the fans excited, for 35 solid years.

RIP Myron Cope

Chris Kamara is the UK’s Gus Johnson

02/25/2008 Mookie 3 comments

Former defender for numerous clubs turned TV analyst for Sky Sports in the UK Chris Kamara enjoys his job. Every Saturday, Sky Sports hosts a program called Soccer Saturday with Jeff Stelling as host and random pundits for certain weeks. What they do for games they can’t broadcast live, they send someone to the pitch (like Kamara or Alan McInally) to cover the game and provide in-game updates.

Watch Kamara go bananas in these videos.

And one more time…

Imagine if Gus Johnson was a soccer announcer, and Kamara was the analyst.

New Jersey Tech = 1976 Buccaneers

New Jersey Tech did the impossible in a college basketball season.  The Highlanders finished their first season in Division I-A with a record of 29 losses and 0 wins! That’s an NCAA worst, and that’s now 33 losses in a row dating back to last season.

It’s not the fact that they suck lost 29 and didn’t win one game, it’s how they lose all 29.

  • Closest margin of defeat: 9 points (Multiple occasions)
  • Largest point total of season scored: 78 points (Lost 98-78 to Longwood)
  • Worst margin of defeat: 44 points (88-44 to Fordham)
  • Largest point total of season against: 98 points
  • Fewest point total of season scored: 28 points (70-28 to Manhattan)
  • Fewest point total of season against: 54 points (Multiple times)
  • Number of times NJ Tech lead at halftime: ZERO!
  • Number of times NJ Tech tied at halftime: ZERO!

I’ve never seen this much incompetence at any level of sports. Maybe that move to Division I-A wasn’t such a good idea after all.

A clip for Canada’s Rogers Sportsnet shows Don Taylor (NHL 2003 anyone?) going over some highlights.  Toronto goalie Vesa Taskala made an enormous what?

Very impressive, I’ve never heard of those. Must’ve hurt.:)

Ben Wallace, Awful Free Throw Shooting, Traded to Cavs

02/21/2008 Mookie Leave a comment

In a mega blockbuster trade as the deadline nears, the Cleveland Cavaliers finally got some players for King James. The Chicago Bulls have traded Ben Wallace to the Cavs as well as Joe Smith for Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, and Cedric Simmons.

A good trade all around for the Cavaliers, as they got rid of Simmons, who does nothing, Hughes, a starter that can’t shoot, and the patch of hair on the neck of Gooden away for a solid, strong, rebounding man in Wallace. Oh yeah, they also got that free throw shooting Wallace is known for.

Update: The Sonics traded Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West to Cleveland for, brace yourselves Sonics fans, Ira Newble, and Donyell Marshall. Kill me now….

Seahawks Franchise Tag Marcus Trufant

02/20/2008 Mookie Leave a comment

Best news I’ve heard all day coming from the Seattle Seahawks. With the franchise tag deadline tomorrow, the Seattle Seahawks have had a lot of thinking to do on who they should use it on. Josh Brown has already been franchised once, Sean Locklear has been a good RT for Seattle, Marcus Trufant was 2nd in the NFC in interceptions. DJ Hackett is always injured, but he could still be tagged.

Marcus Trufant won the tag, meaning he is a Seahawk for sure in the 2008-09 NFL Season. Trufant led the team with 7 interceptions, including 3 against the Arizona Cardinals on December 9th (1 returned for his first career TD), and the game sealing interception for a touchdown in the playoffs against the Washington Redskins.

Now the question remains: What about the other free agents?

Well….let’s break it down.

1. Josh Brown, Kicker, Bald. Brown did not have a strong year, but he still made 28-34 FG’s. To sign him for 1 year, it’ll probably be about $2.5 million. By the looks of things, Seattle will have plenty of cap room to keep Brown. And you can’t let go of the guy who kicked 4 game winning field goals for you in 2006 can you?

2. DJ Hackett, WR, Injured. I’ve already touched on this in another post. He has the potential, but the injuries would be too much for Seattle to keep him in my opinion.

3. Sean Locklear, RT. Locklear is a very good right tackle. But he has been arrested once, and was suspended for violating the substance abuse policy. I don’t think Seattle would want that, time to go Sean.

Gone: Floyd Womack, Niko Koutivides.

Stay: Leroy Hill, Chuck Darby.
