Stan Verrett Gets Owned by John Calipari

03/31/2008 Mookie 1 comment

Last week while Stan Verrett was interviewing Memphis coach John Calipari, he asked Calipari about Memphis’ awful free throw shooting. Not only does Calipari go off, but Verrett seems to have forgotten the importance of researching the team and coach BEFORE interviewing, which is why Calipari rips Stan here a new one.

Dick Enberg, It’s Time To Retire

OH MY!!!! Dick Enberg has been a tremendous announcer, but I think there is quite the possibility the 73 year old is starting to lose his mind. Saturday night’s broadcast of Louisville/North Carolina showed why.

“Hansbrough is fouled….no they say he traveled!” – He had at least 10 cases of not knowing what was going on as far as whistles blown.

“Hansbrough is one assist away from a triple double (rambles on and on), oh sorry, I’m looking at Ty Lawson’s stat line, he has 9 assists.”

“Three pointer from Jerry Smith….sorry that was Andre McGee.”

“He stepped out of bounds, no he traveled, no he was called for a foul.” – Enberg had no idea what was going on with David Padgett.

“Listen to this crowd!!!!” – Enberg on UNC’s fans at least 5 times. Well, for starters, these aren’t Nets fans, and they’re playing this game….in Charlotte!

Enberg also had several problems knowing what the score was and had trouble reading the scoreboard.

I think he’s past his prime, it’s time for him to retire before he embarrasses himself even more.

As for YOU Jay Bilas….do you WANT to marry Tyler Hansbrough? And to think you graduated from Duke.

Well So Much For That

Davidson can’t pull off one more upset as Kansas survive 59-57 in Detroit to advance to the Final Four, and get the monkey off of Bills Self’s back. But it’s the final possession by Davidson that really confused me.

If it was meant for Stephen Curry to shoot the ball, then he should not have been running the whole play, he proceeded to get double teamed, he picked up his dribble, then passed it  at the last second and a desperation three by Jason Richards was way off, ensuring that the Final Four would consist of all #1 seeds.

It was a tremendous run by Davidson, but that last possession was horrible. It was a two point game, they could’ve taken Kansas for 5 more minutes if they went for 2, and instead they destroyed their chance to become this year’s George Mason.

It’s UCLA vs. Memphis and Kansas vs. Tyler Hansbrough this Saturday folks, get your popcorn ready.

Oh yeah, and Gus Johnson FTW.

Driver Convicted of Killing Former NBA Player Is Arrested Again

Remember Malik Sealy? He was a guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, a former first round pick from St. Johns, and an aspiring actor. Tragically, on May 20, 2000, his 8 year career, and his life was over when he was killed in a car accident when his SUV was struck by a truck that was driving on the wrong side of the highway, he was 30 years old.

The person who killed him, Souksangouane Phengsene, was well above the blood alcohol legal limit for Minnesota (he had a .19 reading), was convicted on vehicular homicide for that crime, but he only received a 4 year sentence.

Yesterday, Phengsene was arrested in Minneapolis on suspicion of….DWI again. According to Sportsline:

Souksangouane Phengsene, 51, of Shakopee was booked into the Hennepin County Jail around 2 a.m., according to the county Web site. State Patrol spokesman Mark Peterson said Phengsene is likely to face a felony DWI charge.

This is the 4th time Phengsene has been arrested for drunken driving, I would like to know why he only got a 4 year sentence for killing someone, was not convicted of reckless endangerment (he was driving the wrong way on a highway), and still has the right to drive any vehicle.

It’s pathetic, the man has been arrested (probably drove drunk on several occasions) 4 times, killed someone, endangered other people driving on the highway, and he only got a 4 year sentence and still has the right to drive. What an injustice, and hopefully when he gets convicted of the felony DWI, he’ll no longer be driving, and in prison for quite some time.

Seahawks Fans Aren’t Wimps; Man Spits Into Hamburger of Steelers Fan

This is by far the story of the day. A 24 year old South Kitsap County man (Port Orchard), and diehard Seahawks fan (won’t give out name) was arrested for spitting into a hamburger he cooked, and serving it to a 37 year old Steelers fan. The report from KOMO-TV.com via the Kitsap Sun says:

Deputies said the 37-year-old man in Steelers garb took his daughters to a Mile Hill Drive fast food restaurant Saturday evening, and “began trading friendly barbs about his team and their victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL,” reports said.

One employee told the man that he’d “better not say that to the guy that’s making your food,” but the man thought it was a joke, reports said.

That is, until he opened his “clamshell-style” hamburger container and discovered what he called a “loogie” on his hamburger.

The 37-year-old told his daughters to stop eating, demanded a refund and called the restaurant’s district manager.

A deputy was informed by the manager that the person responsible may be a 24-year-old South Kitsap man who was near his quitting time when the incident occurred.

Eventually, the man confessed to spitting in the 37-year-old’s hamburger container to “gross him out … because he was a Steelers fan,” deputies said.

But that’s not all! The man was charged with 4th degree assault, and…..MARIJUANA POSSESSION!!!  Thank goodness the Steelers fan didn’t ask for brownies.

After a 2-2 showing on Thursday, I hope I can repeat that……

Texas 71 Stanford 69 – Stanford clearly cannot handle small ball well, and Texas has…I don’t know, DJ Augustin, AJ Abrams, you know, GOOD shooters.

Memphis 66 Michigan State 58  Missed Free Throws By Memphis 107

Davidson 64 Wisconsin 61 – Consider me on the Stephen Curry bandwagon.

Kansas 88 Villanova 71  – Kansas will be way too much for Villanova, and Davidson is your Gonzaga/George Mason/1985 LSU Cinderella team for 2008.

Soccer in the Snow!

Canada and Estonia had the luxury of playing in a snowstorm for a FIFA International Friendly. Amazingly (okay, it’s Canada), the Canadians forgot to actually score and lost 2-0 to ESTONIA!!!

This is an awesome video from linkubus7. Why is it so awesome? It’s just everyone’s favorite screaming March Madness announcer Gus Johnson’s famous calls set to the music of “Remember the Name.”

“Bynum to the bucket, Batista with the caaaaatch!” Perfect.

Washington State vs. North Carolina

Why Washington State Could Win: Defense, defending well, and not letting North Carolina score. The Cougars just held Notre Dame, one of the highest scoring teams in the nation to 41 points (1 point per minute to put it in another perspective), and under 25% shooting. That outstanding defensive performance against the Irish happened after they walloped popular upset pick Winthrop and held the to 40. The 81 points they’ve given up in 2 games is the lowest in NCAA Tournament History since 1949. If they can shut down Tyler Hansbrough and Wayne Ellington North Carolina could be a very weak team.

Why North Carolina Could Win: Because no one has stopped Hansbrough, Ellington, or any one of those guys all season.

Verdict: It will be a good game, but North Carolina prevails 76-66.

West Virginia vs. Xavier

Why West Virginia Could Win: Well they just beat Duke right? Shut down defense, to go along with the strong play from Joe Alexander would almost certainly send them to the elite 8. And note that Xavier has twice gone off to very slow starts against Purdue and Georgia.

Why Xavier Could Win: Drew Lavender is a tremendous player. In my opinion, Lavender is very underrated, and was the key in their comebacks against Georgia and Purdue. Xavier also has great free throw shooting, which will be key down the stretch as I think this will be a close game.

Verdict: Tough pick, but the #7 seed makes it as your Cinderella. 64-59.

Darn computer….now I have to rush this in.

Tennessee 79 Louisville 72 (OT)

UCLA 86 Western Kentucky 75

Update: I just read the news about the sudden death of NFL OL prospect Heath Benedict. RIP to him, and hopefully the police and coroners are right in ruling out drugs, alcohol, or any other foul play.
