Drugs and the Dallas Cowboys Get Along Quite Well

Distract yourself from Lofa Tatupu trying to distract the Seahawks into a 6-10 season, or Barry Bonds’ 450 charges, or Manu Ginobili’s European two-step, focus on the Cowboys.

Yesterday, former Cowboys RB Troy Hambrick was sentenced to 5 years in prison for selling crack cocaine. Via the Sporting Life:

Troy Hambrick, a former running back with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals, was sentenced to five years in federal prison on Tuesday for selling crack cocaine to an undercover informant.

United States District Judge Steven D. Merryday issued the sentence to Hambrick, who pleaded guilty three months ago to selling 78 grams of crack cocaine.

A shocker, a Dallas Cowboy player in the news for drugs? Where have I heard that one before?

Nate Newton

The former OL probably had the worst case of drug possession or drug dealing. In 2001, Newton was arrested twice for possession of marijuana. Not your normal 1 bag kind of deal, 388 lbs worth of it is more like it (arrested the first time for 213 lbs, then 175 the 2nd time). He was sentenced to 30 months in prison and I’m sure he is joyous wevery April 20th (look up 4-20).

The 6 time Pro Bowler has apparently “turned his life around” and his son Tre is going to play for Texas.

Michael Irvin

Now a HOFer, Irvin had a history of drug arrests during, and after his playing days with Dallas. Irvin was arrested for cocaine possession at a hotel party. He pled no contest and was sentenced to 4 years probation and was fined $10,000 as part of the sentencing. In addition to that, the NFL suspended him for the first 5 games of the season, and he ended up having a sub-par year.

A whopping one year after his retirement due to his horrific career ending injury, Irvin was arrested again on drug possession charges, however those charges were eventually dropped.

Everyone remembers Irvin from ESPN right? Well he was doing well…until 2005 when he was arrested again, originally for an unpaid speeding ticket, but police found a marijuana pipe, and plastic bags with marijuana residue. Two days later (on the air mind you), he told some story about it being a friend’s and he took it away from him because he too, was battling a drug addiction. Well….ESPN didn’t buy that, they fired him….and I guess your brother can be your friend right?

Terrell Owens

I have to tell you that one? He wasn’t arrested or anything, but he overdosed on prescription drugs and it nearly killed him (some say it was a suicide attempt, but that was later denied).

Owens is currently playing for the Cowboys, in an effort to underachieve in the playoffs.

Chris Henry?

He’s been arrested at least 500 times as a Bengal. Well Cincy finally cut the troubled wide receiver, and on his list of possible destinations, he has the Saints and….COWBOYS!!!

As mentioned, Henry is looking for an NFL team to play for.

Pacman Jones

Again, not arrested for drug possession, but his story involves shooting, strippers, Vegas, and a drug dealer…I won’t go into that because my head hurts from reading the whole thing.

Pacman is eagerly awaiting his next suspension.

Leon Lett

The former DT with a knack for not being football smart (oh come on, you’ve never seen the two famous plays?), missed 28 games in his career because of numerous violations of the drug policy. He was suspended in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1999.

Lett has since retired, cementing himself as Dallas’ greatest goofball.

Deion Sanders

Are you kidding me? We’re not done? Primetime won a Super Bowl with Dallas and was just an all around great player. But….when he made a comeback to join the Ravens, he admitted that he flunked a drug test the previous summer.

As you know, Sanders also had some other troubles in his life including a suicide attempt. He now works with the NFL Network as part of the contract that says the NFL must have at least 5 former Dallas Cowboy players on each network covering games.

Wow, I think I’m done….if you have anymore please leave it in the comments. And DALLAS COWBOY PLAYERS ONLY!
