Penguins Stun Red Wings in Triple Overtime

That’s all I can come up with. About 110 minutes of hockey, 7 goals, and Petr Sykora saying he would score the winner. Detroit was just 1:00 away from winning their first Stanley Cup in 5 years after rallying from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead, and instead allowed Max Talbot to tie it with 34.3 to go in regulation.

The next 2 OT’s were grueling battles, some great defensive plays, and great saves by Marc Andre-Fleury and Chris Osgood. It was Fleury however who had to make over 50 saves and over 20 alone in the OT sessions. Pittsburgh was on the defensive as they were unable to clear the puck from their own zone most of the time, and stringing 2 simple passes together was a challenge. That strong Wings defense forced giveaways, shoot-ins that would end up failing, yet somehow Pittsburgh survived. They even had the better of their few and far between chances.

Twice they hit the goalpost and in the 3rd OT, Petr Sykora scores a power play goal after a high-sticking major penalty on Detroit, and at 11:51 PM in Detroit, the Stanley Cup still had not yet been won. Wednesday night could either be Detroit storming back with Pavel Datsyuk leading the way and winning the Cup on the road, or the Pens fans in their home finale will see Sidney Crosby and company tie the series and make it 1 win away from one of the great Stanley Cup comebacks of all time.
