    Thank God… no Americans!

  2. adam84 Says:

    I agree with you uberhim!

  3. Mookie Says:

Well, the Americans will be in the studio for analysis (Rob Stone, Julie Foudy), but yes, no American commentators.

You all have World Cup 2006 fresh in your mind I see.

  4. MarcoGK Says:

Being an American, I agree, thank God no American commentators!!

  5. espnsux Says:

Are you so happy that there are no Americans in the booth that you haven’t noticed you’ll be listening to Tommy Smyth? I’d rather stick a fork in my ear.

  6. Euro Dose: June 4th ‘08 - Euro 2008 Says:

[...] ESPN announcer lineup leaked (Stupid Sideline Reporters) [...]

  7. Mookie Says:

Are you so happy that there are no Americans in the booth that you haven’t noticed you’ll be listening to Tommy Smyth? I’d rather stick a fork in my ear.

Would you rather listen to Marcelo Balboa talk about “selling fouls”? Smyth may not be great, but at least his analysis is better than Wynalda, Balboa, and whoever else ESPN can offer.

  8. uberhim Says:

What’s up with ESPN and the rubbish studio panels? Anyone remember the Champions League panelists – Janusz Michallik, Shaka Hislop, and Frank Leboeuf…?

Also, anyone remember how crappy FIFA 2000 was with Julie Foudy and Phil Schoen commentating?

  9. Mookie Says:

It’s ESPN, if you’re expecting high standards for anything outside of what they do for Boston or New York then you’re in dreamland.

  10. Ethan Says:

In-game commentary has been top notch, but the studio commentary is PAINFUL. My lord. The host looks drugged up and Foudy is a whiner. So strained, it;s embarrassing.

  11. Mookie Says:

ESPN is doing another awful job of covering this tournament aside from the commentary.

Will Silva and Steve Bunin know nothing about soccer, and Silva forgot Andy Gray’s name for a moment.

  12. Soccercoach Says:

Andy Gray is great and knows what he is talking about. Unfortunately he is the only one! Tell that Smith guy and that woman that they need to learn the rules. The Dutch first goal was legal as the Italian player although off the pitch was still considered in the game. Can’t they hire some people who actually know what they are talking about??? And please, get rid of that woman!!

  13. Mookie Says:

Julie Foudy is terrible, Smyth is okay but he doesn’t admit he is wrong 99% of the time.

I didn’t see the injured player at first but now that I see it the goal is legal.

  14. Derek C Says:

Having started life listening to BBC Radio commentators, I just can’t listen to any of them. British, Irish, American whatever…I turn the TV volume down just enough not to lose the crowd noise…

  15. Mookie Says:

There has to be a day when there are no commentators and just the crowd noise….

  16. Orlandoman Says:

As someone who used to watch the games in Spanish rather than suffer the ESPN commentary teams, it is a joy to listen to Healey and Gray together.

Derek C: How do you listen to BBC commentaries? They always seem to be blocked.

  17. Mookie Says:

Funny, if ESPN’s commentators were lousy, the Spanish rights go to ESPN Deportes, which I don’t have unless I pay up.

  18. james Says:

I am Irish and let me say, Tomy Smyth is possibly the biggest wanker to come out of Ireland – he has just an awful chalk on blackboard voice. He speaks in cliches and his back and forth with Derek Rae is embarrassing. Cannot understand why ESPN stick with him.

  19. Spaniard in Dallas Says:

    GET RID OF TOMMY SMYTH.

  20. Spaniard in Dallas Says:

    GET RID OF TOMMY SMYTH.

He is an annoying, bullying, over-aggressive little troll. And that voice irritates the f*ck out of everyone I know!

There’s a group of us here in Dallas following the tournament – on MUTE!!

Andy Gray knows football. Julie is doing OK. But really GET RID OF TOMMY SMYTH!!

  21. Mick Says:

I have what may be a silly question. Are ESPN’s commentators actually at the matches or are they watching on t.v.? I’m specifically referring to Smyth and Rae. Smyth was in the studio yesterday which, I assume, is in Connecticut. I can’t imagine that ESPN would set up a studio in Austria or Switzerland for what is a niche sport in the States. Any info appreciated.

  22. Orlandoman Says:

A little unfair I think. Sure, Tommy Smyth can be annoying and gets confused at times, but he knows his stuff, and can be very funny (his comment today about “the world not being ready for the sight of Gus Hiddink in Lederhosen” was hilarious!) It’s obvious that he loves the game, has been nominated for five Emmy awards, and has probably realized by now, given that he’s 63, that football’s not all that important in the grand scheme of things.

  23. Mookie Says:

@ Spaniard in Dallas – Foudy is NOT ok….unless she is on mute. Like Orlandoman said, Smyth is okay even though he can be annoying.

@ Mick – The commentators are in Bristol, only Pedro Gomez is in Europe.

  24. Mick Says:

    Mookie,
I figured as much. Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate the info. All the best.

  25. Derek C Says:

Orlandoman…RE BBC Radio…I was referring to the good old days of Radio 2 Saturday afternoons on the radio – guess I’m showing my age :)

Thought Robbie Mustoe did a good job today.

  26. Ozzy Says:

What’s wrong with this Tommy Smith guy? BEfore the Germany-Turkey game, he starts with badmouthing Turkey, and then ends by saying “noone will remember Turkey”… Turks played amazingly well, until the last minute of the German game. Hats off to the Turks! oh and Tommy Smith? I think he can be anything but a reporter! Thanks!

  27. Angela Sessa Says:

    Healey,
you need to go away!! You are the biggest narcissitic idiot in the world of commentators.
For me, and I , in my opinion, blaaa, blaaaa.
Comparing a soccer match to the Russian Revolution? Look up how many people were homeless, hungry or killed.
You need to be fired ASAP
    Angela Sessa

  28. Mookie Says:

Healey is not great, he’s decent, too cliche reliant, and he should not have gotten the final.

  29. Angela Sessa Says:

Oh no, this Healey freak is going to do the commentary on Sunday when my Germany is going to eat these Spaniards Bk, Lu and dinner??
I have a MUTE button, Thanks be to God.
    Angela

  30. Mookie Says:

    First off Spain will win……

Second, if you watched the World Cup in 2006 on ESPN then this is a huge improvement.

  31. Eric Says:

Balboa was pretty embarrassing. However, he was still much much better than Ty Keo. Anyone remember that guy? I hope he’s dead.

I like Gray a lot, obviously has the knowledge of someone who has played the game at a competitive level (something Smyth obviously lacks). I think ESPN was on the right track with Balboa (getting American talent), but he is way to self conscious to be an announcer. I hope Wynalda can get in the booth and give it a go the next WC.

  32. Mookie Says:

Pretty harsh to wish he’s dead….but yeah, he was bad and is not doing much today.

And in my opinion, Wynalda is super annoying, I prefer John Harkes over him and Balboa.
