The Best US TV Play By Play Announcer Tournament

It’s too often that we hear about the worst announcers, worst sideline reporters, worst TV sports personalities, and yes, while there are indeed plenty up there, we need to pay homage to the best play-by-play man on television. Here is the bracket of 32 announcers that was divided into 4 regions:

  • Old Timers Region. This is for announcers that are 65 or older, but are still belting out home run calls, touchdown screeches, and slam dunk hollers.
  • Young Guns Region. Announcers that are under 50 make up this region. The winner of the Young Guns will face the winner of the Old Timers.
  • Retired/Deceased Legends Region. They are either dead (which makes them retired) or retired, simple.
  • Golden Mic Region. The region with the rest of the best. The winner of this region will face the winner of the Retired/Deceased Legends Region in the final 4.

Here are the qualifications to be in this tournament:

  • Must commentate on at least 2 sports.
  • Needs to be on national TV at least once.
  • Name must not be “Bryant Gumbel, NFL Network”.

Now some questions that I’ll answer……

Who Determines The Winner?

You do! With the help of Pollcode (because WordPress refuses to make a poll of their own), you determine the winner of each contest.

Who Created The Seedings?

I did. Some of it is personal opinion, some of it is opinions from others around the radio, internet, and television, and the rest is common sense on who is in and who is out.

Ahem….The Matchups?

Oh yeah umm…..after the jump you’ll see it.

Old Timers Region

(1) Marv Albert vs. (8) Dick Enberg

(4) Jon Miller vs. (5) Verne Lundquist

(2) Harry Kalas vs. (7) Bob Uecker

(3) Vin Scully vs. (6) Brent Musberger

Young Guns Region

(1) Gus Johnson vs. (8) Ian Eagle

(4) Dan Shulman vs. (5) Matt Vasgersian

(2) Mike Breen vs. (7) Mike Tirico

(3) Kevin Harlan vs. (6) Sean McDonough

Deceased/Retired Legends Region

(1) Jack Buck vs. (8) Ray Scott

(4) Lindsay Nelson vs. (5) Charlie Jones

(2) Keith Jackson vs. (7) Jim McKay

(3) Curt Gowdy vs. (6) Howard Cosell

Golden Mic Region

(1) Al Michaels vs. (8) Sam Rosen

(4) Gary Thorne vs. (5) Mike Emrick

(2) Greg Gumbel vs. (7) Mike Patrick

(3) Tom Hammond vs. (6) Jim Nantz

I know you’ll disagree with most of the seedings, but YOU try and fill out something like this. First 4 games will be played tomorrow on Monday.

Marv Albert is indeed the #1 overall seed.

EDIT: Oops…Gifford just did MNF pbp and nothing more, so he’s DQed. There was a re-seeding process in the Retired/Deceased Region which means Lindsay Nelson is the #4 seed.

Nice stuff. Great names, but there’s always more. Ted Husing, Bill Stern, Lindsey Nelson, Ernie Harwell, Harry Carey, etc.

Check out my stuff, I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

    Thank you very much……

It was a tough thing to do, so many names and only 32 spots…and no I wasn’t planning on a play-in game.:)

  3. Rob in NYC Says:

any list that does not include Lindsay Nelson is not worthy of a serious discourse however I will happily point out the many
reason your list is lacking: seventeen years with the New York Mets, and three with the San Francisco Giants, over 30 years of NCAA football. including twenty-six Cotton Bowls, five Sugar Bowls, four Rose Bowls and fourteen years announcing Notre Dame games. the MLB hall of fame.He did a lot Super bowls Need I continue?

  4. Mookie Says:

Good news, looks like when I put Frank Gifford in I forgot he only did one sport…so I’m going to have to re-seed that section so Nelson is in…

Wow, I forgot about Nelson in amidst of doing this, thank you very much for your input.
