Nothing surprising, but because Jordan Babineaux and Rocky Bernard have been suspended 1 game, Brandon Coutu and Olindo Mare stay on the roster in the tight kicking duel. Mare has a powerful leg and has had a lot of touchbacks, while Coutu is more accurate on the field goals. Should be an interesting battle.

Wide receiver position is not going to be a concern after October, because Deion Branch and Bobby Engram should be back, most certainly Engram. I think Courtney Taylor and Jordan Kent will be very good receivers with their athleticism and great hands, but the experience issue always comes to mind. Don’t think those two have worked with Matt Hasselbeck in a real game at the same time (Taylor briefly did, Kent did not).

Justin Forsett returning punts is suicide, because he can’t hold on to the ball, but if you use him as a kick returner while Nate Burleson goes for punt returns, then I think it’s a little more reasonable.

Should be a great season, NFL previews all week long!

Chad Ocho Cinco Gives Roger Goodell More Ammunition

Really…..his name is now Chad Ocho Cinco.

Now Chad Ocho Cinco can wear this jersey without Goodell fining him!

Now Chad Ocho Cinco can wear this jersey without Goodell fining him!

This has undoubtedly made my day. How can you beat this? Even if you think he’s a total loco person (like me) you have to admit that this is a funny move made to get around the rules of the NFL. That makes Goodell very unhappy. You won’t like him when he’s unhappy.

I just want to know if he spoke with Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Mark Super Duper before legally changing his name.

So go grab a beer (or soda), a large pepperoni pizza, and see what Goodell and Ocho Cinco do now.

Jay Feely’s Career Has Officially Hit a Low Point

08/28/2008 Mookie Leave a comment

Giants fans and Seahawks fans alike remember Jay Feely very well. It was just 3 years ago when Feely, in a pivotal match against the eventual NFC Champion Seahawks, missed 3 game winning field goals, en route to a 24-21 overtime loss in what is considered by some NFL fans, the turning point in the Giants season.

After 2006 the Giants cut him and he was moved to Miami, who also released him in August. This was one of his quotes in June 2008:

“I am going to be the best kicker in the NFL this year. I don’t know any guy on this team that worked harder than me this offseason.”

Kansas City got the message and just signed him a couple of days ago. He would challenge Connor Barth and Nick Novak for the job in what Herm Edwards called a “kick off”, to determine if Feely would make the team.

Obviously he lost and he was cut after 24 hours.

Don’t worry Jay, I think the Saints need a kicker right now, and you can be reunite with Jeremy Shockey, who probably still thinks the Giants won that game…..isn’t that right Jeremy?

9 Year Old Banned For Being Good; Let’s Apply That Logic

08/26/2008 Mookie Leave a comment

Jericho Scott, a 9 year old pitcher in New Haven, CT, can’t play on his little league team. Why? Not because he’s actually a short 16 year old (Danny Almonte at age 14 anyone?), not because he’s been ‘roiding, not because his parents beat the other kids with baseball bats, it’s because he’s too good! And frankly, because he’s so good, we don’t want our team to play!

Officials for the three-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho’s team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it. They say Jericho’s coach, Wilfred Vidro, has resigned.

But Vidro says he didn’t quit and the team refuses to disband. Players and parents held a protest at the league’s field on Saturday urging the league to let Jericho pitch.

“He’s never hurt any one,” Vidro said. “He’s on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?”

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.

“I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”

Absolutely pathetic. You can’t move him up a league to where the 10 year olds and 11 year olds are playing? You can’t sign him a lucrative 6 year deal with the New York Mets? You can’t even try and learn how to hit off him? You have to ban him because he’s good? The kid didn’t bean anyone, his pitching control isn’t like Mark Fidrych, and because he is good you’re disbanding the team?

Fair enough, then the following must happen:

  • The NFL should ban Peyton Manning from playing in the league because he is very good and frankly not that many people can beat him.
  • The US national basketball team can no longer compete in the Olympics because they can’t be beat and frankly losing by 49 (cough)Germany(cough) is the same thing as forfeiting. The players on the squad should be shipped off to a European country for lots of mon…..oh wait.
  • The Chinese gymnastics team that is being accused of having 4 year olds on the team should be banned for life for winning all the gold medals.
  • Brandon Webb must also be banned for winning too many games and consistently performing well against the opposition.
  • Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps will also be banned for winning everything.

I feel really sorry for Jericho, and really it’s the genius officials for this league that screwed everything up.

In a country that is now banning dodgeball, touch football (touch!), tag, all-star games, and now exceptional players, this next generation of players representing the US will be an interesting bunch.

Yep, It’s That Bad

08/21/2008 Mookie 3 comments

I’ve been toying with google lately, and since no one likes NBC’s coverage of the Beijing Beach Volleyball/Gymnastics/Michael Phelps and other swimming/Tape Delayed extravaganza, I took the liberty of typing in “CBC Olympic Coverage Sucks”. It doesn’t, the CBC has been great (save for that horrible diving analyst), and instead, I get this.

I guess it is safe to say that NBC sucks.

Usain Bolt Shows No Mercy

08/20/2008 Mookie Leave a comment

While NBC continues to talk about Michael Phelps on that joke of a show called Olympic Update, the rest of the world turned their eyes to something spectacular. Usain Bolt of Jamaica, already the world’s fastest man after winning the 100 meter final in 9.69, had a chance to do the double in his specialty, the 200 meters. I can’t get the video because if you’re going to watch it, it’s going to be on (Country broadcaster’s) website!

Bolt, up against defending champion Shawn Crawford and other stars Wallace Spearmon and Walter Dix, blew every one away to the tune of a .62 second differential between first and 2nd (which went to Crawford after Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles was DQed for running out of his lane, as well as Spearmon). A world record time of 19.30, beating Michael Johnson’s record set back in 1996 in Atlanta.

It’s not the fact that he broke the record, it’s how badly he beat everybody, he was up by 10 meters heading into the final stretch! This man is from another planet, and Jamaica should be seeing more gold in the 4 x 100 relay.

If I can find a video then I’ll put it up, but for now words will do.

Usain Bolt, just 22 years old, is by far the best sprinter out there, I don’t see anyone beating him, or Jamaica in general. The USA track team has had a poor Olympics, and also Jamaica is kicking everyone out of the stadium with their speed on both men and women’s sides. The Jamaicans have won every sprinting final, and a gold in the relays would cap off a magical Olympics for the Jamaican track and field team.

It’s NBA Europa!

08/19/2008 Mookie Leave a comment

This is getting out of hand, Shawn Kemp, the very troubled 4007 year old former Sonics great is headed for Italy. This continues a string of NBAers heading to Europe, a list that includes:

Gordon Giricek

Jannero Pargo

Josh Childress

Bostjan Nachbar

Kemp will be playing in the top flight of Italian basketball, via ESPN:

The Italian team Premiata Montegranaro announced on Sunday that 38-year-old Shawn Kemp has agreed to play for the team starting in November.

“I am happy that a player that has made basketball history would come to Montegranaro,” coach Alessandro Finelli said.

Finelli believed that the six-time NBA All-Star, who last played in the NBA in 2002-03, could still contribute.

“He is very motivated,” Finelli said. “And he has been staying in shape to show up at our camp in good shape.”

Kemp averaged 14.6 points and 8.4 rebounds over 14 NBA seasons. He played eight years with Seattle, three with Cleveland, two with Portland and finished with one season in Orlando.

Shawn Kemp is old, he is over the hill, there is no way he succeeds in any league. And the string of players bolting to Europe seems to be a trend started by Brendan Jennings, who went from high school to Europe because of the recent rule put in that high schoolers can’t jump ship.

If you excuse me, I’ve just been signed by Fenerbahce, so off to Turkey I go.
