That’s right. The Washington Huskies got off the bubble the old fashioned way, by winning the conference tournament over the favored top seed. After enduring criticism throughout the year for sucking away from their home court, Washington responded by winning 3 of their last 4 road games in conference play, followed by 3 games in 3 days in LA, culminated with a 79-75 upset over the California Golden Bears. The win earns them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and ensures they won’t be one of those bubble teams heading into Selection Sunday.
I was hard on this team (especially Lorenzo Romar) all year long because they looked totally lost on the road and pretty much forfeited most of their road games by halftime. However, they got hot when it mattered and get the honor of being a double digit seed in the big dance, as opposed to a #1 seed in the NIT.
Everyone showed up and played a perfect team game today. Quincy Pondexter, Venoy Overton, Isaiah Thomas, Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Elston Turner, Darnell Gant, Justin Holiday, and even Tyrone Breshers were absolutely vital today. In the process of winning, they’ve likely just sent rivals Arizona State to the NIT. Good days for Husky Nation.
I’m still ecstatic over this victory, and now Sunday awaits.
Congratulations to the 2010 Pac-10 Conference Tournament Champions, the Washington Huskies!
