I’ve seen this story before. Toronto FC has a solid run of form and then capitulates during the summer. That’s been the story for 3 years running and now it appears that we’re headed for a 4th if we follow the trend. Way too often TFC start slowly (lose to start the season), have a resurgence, suck during the summer months and finish poorly, and the quality of the team doesn’t really seem to matter all that much. This started since year one…
2007 – Start season with 4 straight losses, then proceed to win 4, lose 2, and draw 1 from May 12th to June 17th. After June 17th they recorded one win against Real Salt Lake 2-1 away from home on July 4th….then did not win again until October 4th. Of course it should also be noted that after a 1-1 draw against the Chicago FIre three days later they would not score again until September, a total of 824 scoreless minutes set the record in MLS for longest goal drought. End Result: 6-17-7, 25 pts, no playoffs
2008 – Lose first two games, notch first win of the season on April 13th against hte Los Angeles Galaxy as part of a 6 game (4 wins, 2 draws) unbeaten run until May 24th. The collapse begins on June 21st and ends on September 27th. TFC’s record in the league was a stellar 1 win, 8 losses, and 5 draws. By the time they start winning again it’s too late. End Result: 9-13-8, 35 pts, no playoffs
2009 – Begin the season with a 1-2-2 record, lose only once in the proceeding 6 games. This next collapse commences on June 27th and lasts until October 10th. During that span they won just 3 of 13 games. TFC beat (the eventual champion) Real Salt Lake 1-0 on October 17th, meaning only a win against the crappy New York Red Bulls would get them into the playoffs…..then 5-0 happened. End Result: 10-11-9, 39 pts, no playoffs
2010 – TFC has lost all but one road game (a 0-0 draw against LA), and has a 100% home record. In their last 5 league games they’re 3-1-1 and have 4 home games in a row coming up soon starting June 5th. End Result: ??
It’s obvious that Mo Johnston is staying until season’s end, so for as long as he’s still here I demand that the pattern doesn’t repeat itself, or else Mo must go the day after the regular season ends. I can’t put up with rewarding this man despite constant failure every year.
I’m not optimistic despite TFC’s improved play. I just can’t bring myself into thinking that this is a playoff team. One significant injury to someone like Dwayne De Rosario or Stefan Frei and it’s over.
Go TFC and please win a game on the road.
