ON THIS DAY: Germany 4 Costa Rica 2

June 9th, 2006 – The world’s eyes were focused on Germany for our most recent FIFA World Cup. Italy prevailed in a penalty shootout over France in the final while the hosts placed 3rd with a 3-1 win over Portugal. The 2002 quarterfinalists USA crashed out in the group stages and Bruce Arena ended up with the pink slip.

Today’s video will show you how the tournament started. Germany faced CONCACAF minnows Costa Rica in Munich. Defender Philippe Lahm scored the first goal of the  World Cup. Miroslav Klose scored twice, Torsten Frings also added to the tally as they fended off the Ticos in an entertaining 4-2 victory. Paulo Wanchope had both goals for the underdogs but it wasn’t enough. Costa Rica was eliminated in the group stages along with Poland while Ecuador advanced with the Germans.
