I just want a good game. Or a game with goals. This World Cup so far has been pretty disappointing with so many teams playing not to lose instead of trying to win. Brazil are playing today against minnows North Korea so at least the chance of there being goals is pretty high. This won’t be a proper “live blog” but just periodic thoughts throughout the game. Ellis Park in Johannesburg awaits the 5-time champions as they look to take an early lead in Group G after Portugal and Cote D’Ivoire bored everyone to death with a 0-0 draw.
Brazil lineup: Julio Cesar (GK) — Maicon, Lucio, Juan, Michel Bastos — Elano, Silva, Kaka, Felipe Melo — Luis Fabiano, Robinho
North Korea lineup: Myong-Guk Ri (GK) — Jong-Hyok Cha, Jun-Il Ri, Kwang-Chon Ri, Chol-Jin Pak, Nam-C Pak — Yun-Nam Ji, In-Guk Mun, Yong-Hak Ahn, Tae-Se Jong — Yong-Jo Hong
North Korea are playing a formation that indicates they want to defend for their lives.
11:34 AM – Hey! ESPN has ended their useless jersey indicator graphic and just put a color next to the team abbreviations. It only took them 4 days to do it! To be fair this is a minor thing as they have been good with their coverage.
11th min – Brazil are doing all of the pressuring. North Korea got a weak shot away but that’s it.
17th – Not a bad effort by Jong-Hyok Cha from distance. They’re defending well but they won’t be able to absorb all of this pressure.
21st – What’s going on? They haven’t scored yet? I’m prepared for a 1-0 now.
27th – Tae-Se Jong goes down in the middle of a Brazilian attack. Interesting.
37th – Still no goal. Brazil attacking but not getting enough good chances.
39th – All crossing, little connecting. North Korea clearing everything.
45th – 0-0 at halftime. I’m sick of this World Cup defense. I know North Korea has to do it but I fear this will be the norm for quite a bit.
51st – Free kick from Michel Bastos goes just wide. Finally one that doesn’t go miles over the crossbar.
54th – 1-0 Brazil (Maicon). Amazing goal from a tight angle from the Right Back. It just swerved in towards the far post.
71st – 2-0 Brazil (Elano). It’s over now. Beautiful throughball finds the Manchester City man and he slots it home with ease.
76th – Not Brazil’s best performance by any means but give credit to North Korea for hanging on this long.
86th – Holy crap North Korea nearly gets a great chance. Tae Se was in on goal off a long ball but it was tackled away for a corner, which amounted to nothing.
89th – GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yun-Nam Ji has pulled North Korea within 1! WOW!
Fulltime: Brazil 2 North Korea 1
Not the scoreline we expected . Full credit again to North Korea for hanging around but they fall just short. Just the second match with more than 2 goals and we nearly got a shock result.
