More Fallout From “SkyGate”

Assuming you can still watch the video, that would be Richard Keys asking pundit Jamie Redknapp “Would you smash it?” in reference to a woman named “Louise” (edit: Redknapp’s ex-girlfriend). You don’t have to be well-versed in British slang to understand context and how “smash” is used. Andy Gray is gone as you can read in the post below (or here if you aren’t looking from the home page), but now the question is whether or not the long time Premier League host stays too.

Sky Sports was last night under growing pressure to axe its main football anchor Richard Keys, after earlier sacking his colleague Andy Gray over a string ofsexist remarks made off air but caught on tape.

After Gray was summarily dismissed when new footage came to light that showed him making lewd suggestions to a female co-host, the pressure to take action against Keys, too, increased when yet another clip appeared to show him talking in sexist terms about a former girlfriend of the pundit Jamie Redknapp.

The pair were originally disciplined for making sexist remarks about the female assistant referee Sian Massey before Saturday’s match between Wolves and Liverpool. Again they were off air but recorded on tape and leaked to the media.

The new evidence against Keys, in which he refers to the woman as “it” and twice asks the former Liverpool and Spurs player if he “smashed it”, appeared to come from the same source as the earlier Gray video and was posted from the same YouTube account. In it Keys is recorded chatting to Redknapp, Ruud Gullit and Graeme Souness before going on air at Stamford Bridge. The conversation begins with someone behind the camera mentioning a former girlfriend of Redknapp called Louise. Keys asks Redknapp whether he “smashed it” and the former player replies that he “used to go out with her”.

The clincher for Gray to get the boot was….

The fresh evidence emerged after a video was posted on YouTube that showed him asking his fellow presenter Charlotte Jackson to “tuck this in for me, love” as he gestured towards his trousers during a commercial break. “Andy Gray’s contract has been terminated for unacceptable behaviour. After issuing a warning yesterday we have no hesitation in taking this action after becoming aware of new information today,” said Sky Sports’ managing director, Barney Francis.

Based on this there’s no doubt both of them need to go. All of this was leaked and the only reason I can think of a Wikileaks-style releasing of all of these clips is they aren’t popular in the workplace. Keys has been disciplined for swearing before so the sexual harassment is just another notch on his slowly unbuckling belt.

It would be really hard for both of them to find work in the immediate future (if Keys is indeed sacked and not suspended) and as mentioned in the breaking news post ESPN wouldn’t touch them with a ten-foot pole given their lengthy history involving this subject matter.

Don’t be surprised if even more clips show up on Youtube at this rate.

The problem for me wasn’t that he asked Redknapp if he smashed it, it was that he infered that Redkanpp’s girlfriend was a slut by what he said at the end of the video.

      Pretty much.

Thought what Gray did was far worse though. In a normal workplace that’s a firing. Reading comments from UK insiders it looks like neither of these men were popular in the workplace.
