This is the worst ending to a basketball game I’ve ever seen. Horrible officiating denied Rutgers one last chance to upset St. John’s in the second round of the Big East Tournament. The video is only 1:09 so count the mistakes with me:
1.) After the Rutgers in-bounds pass is stolen, Justin Brownlee travels (travels!).
2.) Brownlee also stepped out of bounds as he was traveling with 1.7 left.
3.) The referees decide that both of these things are completely legal and the clock runs out.
4.) Prior to all of this, the horn sounded on St. John’s 2nd of 2 free throws, which made the game 65-63 in their favor.
There is no justification for any of this. Brownlee threw the ball into the stands in that whole fiasco but no technical foul was called, and rightly so as it was not a blatant attempt to delay the game. But he certainly traveled and stepped out of bounds so how Tim Higgins, Jim Burr, and Earl Walton failed to see this even though all of them were looking in that direction is beyond me. The officials immediately headed for the locker room and the game never reset to 1.7. That is an unbelievable blown call to the point where I think the fix is in. Referees are human and make mistakes but that is not even a mistake given how blatant the offenses were. If you like conspiracies, the O/U for today’s game was 128.5 and the final point total was….128 points.
Incredibly bizarre and remarkably terrible. St. John’s advances and Rutgers doesn’t even get 1.7 more seconds to play spoiler.
I don’t think the officiating crew will get another game this tournament after that nonsense.
UPDATE: Official Big East statement reads as follows..
“The Big East Conference acknowledges that two separate officiating errors occurred at the conclusion of the St. John’s vs. Rutgers game. Both missed violations should have caused the game clock to stop and a change of possession to occur prior to the end of the game. Neither error is reviewable under NCAA playing rules.”
NEITHER ERROR IS REVIEWABLE? ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Well thanks to this it confirms nothing can be done about the final moments of the game and Bozo the Clown officiating helped knock Rutgers out of the Big East tournament.
