A friendly reminder for anyone interested, I’ll do my best to provide live round-by-round coverage of UFC on Versus 4:
Barry vs. Kongo tomorrow night. Wait, Barry vs. Kongo? That’s right folks, Nate Marquardt failed his medical today and was rumored to be at 182 lbs on weigh-in day instead of the 170 lbs welterweight limit.
There’s not much more known at this point about Marquardt’s medical clearance beyond weight problems but he is out of his main event slot against Rick Story, and Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo has been moved to the night’s main event. Rick Story will fight Charlie Brenneman on the main card, and Brenneman himself had his opponent of TJ Grant pull out of their matchup earlier in the week. That fight will serve as the co-main.
Now the bigger issue here is Dana White’s announcement that Nate Marquardt will not be a part of the UFC anymore. According to this video posted minutes ago from the man himself, White proclaimed that not only was Marquardt off the main event on Versus, but said he “will no longer be with the UFC”. It’s very odd to cut someone for not being medically cleared, so there’s something else up with this story. For sure it will make for great speculation, especially considering he was still at middleweight level for a welterweight fight. Marquardt was suspended by the UFC for a positive drug test after his victory over Ivan Salaverry in 2005 (the first live show on Spike TV and Nate’s first UFC fight) and the fight itself was so bad he was banished to the prelims in 2 of his subsequent 3 fights upon his return from suspension. Another controversial incident for Nate was his fight with Thales Leites at UFC 85, where he lost by split decision after receiving two points deductions for separate illegal moves. Now today he’s subject to the UFC pink slip after what appears to be a disastrous weight cut and move to 170.
It’s a not-so-great day for Nate “The Great” and it’s a bad day for the UFC to do more card shuffling for an injury-riddled event the day before fight night. This is the updated main card:
Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo
Charlie Brenneman vs. Rick Story
Matt Brown vs. John Howard
Matt Mitrione vs. Christian Morecraft
