The tweet says it all. UFC president Dana White will have a special announcement at 1 PM ET/10 AM PT on which fighters will headline the first ever card on FOX. He knows the answer, but I still feel like speculating.
1.) Mauricio Rua vs. Dan Henderson. This would arguably be for the next title shot. Shogun ripped Forrest Griffin to shreds last Saturday and Dan Henderson is a free agent long rumored to be making a return to the UFC. For two legends of PRIDE it’s amazing they’ve avoided each other for so long. They are both KO artists who always have exciting fights and this could be a very competitive and technical battle for hardcore and new MMA fans to enjoy.
2.) Alistair Overeem vs. Warm Body at Heavyweight. The Strikeforce exodus continues with recently-released Strikeforce HW Champion Alistair Overeem. He’s built like a horse and is very capable of knocking out anyone who wants to engage with him. The reason why he didn’t KO Fabricio Werdum is because Fabricio isn’t someone who likes to engage in stand-up battles. I’m sure the UFC can sign Overeem and then have him fight Frank Mir, Brendan Schaub, Shane Carwin, or Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a headlining spot to showcase a potential HW star and PPV draw.
3.) Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson. Two of the most exciting fighters in the lightweight division battle for the next title shot. Guida has won two “Fight of the Year” honors, Ben Henderson has one, and both are high-energy guys who are often engaged in memorable wars. Henderson’s dominating win over Jim Miller and Guida’s easy victory over Anthony Pettis means both have moved up the rankings. It only makes sense to show the public that the little guys can always bring a fantastic scrap. I wouldn’t look for a KO from either one of them but the scrambles and submission attempts on the ground would be an absolute joy to watch.
We’ll know the answer tomorrow morning. I can’t wait! The first FOX card is set for November 12th at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT.
