Battle of the Losers 2012: East Region

New logo coming next year.

Region #3 of BOTL 2012 is up and I know it’s late, but I will try and get it done this week. Who will win the East? It’s a shock, check out after the jump.

First Round

#1 Southern Miss vs. #8 UNC-Asheville

Maybe not too big a shock that UNC-Asheville pulled off the upset. Southern Miss was the weakest #1 seed (being a #9 in real life) and UNC-Asheville pulled away late in the 2nd half for the W. UNC-Asheville 77 Southern Miss 66

#4 Harvard vs. #5 Montana

The Crimson hit 53% of their shots and held Montana to just 19 rebounds in a non-competitive romp. Harvard 81 Montana 62

#2 West Virginia vs. #7 Loyola (MD)

Loyola never led and West Virginia had a +22 rebound advantage. Yawn. West Virginia 81 Loyola (MD) 63

#3 Texas vs. #6 St. Bonaventure

In a very competitive game, the Longhorns survived their own terrible shooting, including 1-11 from the three-point territory, and pulled off a last minute win over St. Bonaventure. With the game tied at 64-64 with under a minute remaining, Sheldon McLellan banked home the go-ahead bucket, and after St. Bonaventure missed their three, Alexis Wangmene went to the FT line to seal the game. He missed the 2nd of 2 FTs but Texas corralled the offensive rebound and sank two more shots to end the proceedings. The Bonnies would score a late three-pointer but time had expired. Texas 69 St. Bonaventure 67

Second Round

#4 Harvard vs. #8 UNC-Asheville

Ouch. Harvard shot just 16-48 from the floor and UNC-Asheville’s run continues. Matt Dickey led all scorers with 15 pts and the Bulldogs pounded the Crimson from start to finish. UNC-Asheville 68 Harvard 42

#2 West Virginia vs. #3 Texas

J’Covan Brown put up 30 points to go with 5 rebounds as the Longhorns won a game they won fairly comfortably. Texas 75 West Virginia 68

Regional Final

#3 Texas vs. #8 UNC-Asheville

UNC-Asheville stormed out of the gates and just completely overwhelmed Texas to end the half and were up 44-26 at halftime. The lead swelled to 20 in the opening 4 minutes of the 2nd half, but the Longhorns would not quit. With 10 minutes left they chopped the deficit to 56-47. The Bulldogs had another run in them and held their lines with a 65-55 advantage with 4:39 to go. Texas made another run and forced OT with a stunning three-pointer from Sheldon McLellan to tie things up at 73-73 with :10 to play in regulation. Quinard Jackson’s winning shot was no good and overtime was upon us. UNC-Asheville never trailed in overtime, scoring the first 6 points of the extra session and pulling away with a classic victory to advance to the Final Four. UNC-Asheville 86 Texas 83 (OT)

Next Region: Midwest

It’s UNLV vs. Long Beach State in the first semi, and UNC-Asheville vs. TBA in the other! An unlikely final set if I say so.
